A Childhood Shaped by Language
I didn’t know it back then, but my journey into the world of language began when I was a child. Growing up with a mother who couldn’t read or write, I unknowingly became her translator long before I understood the true nature of this role. Whether it was reading documents, navigating appointments, or even helping with simple everyday tasks, I became her bridge to a world that she couldn’t access on her own. These early moments, seemingly small at the time, taught me something profound—long before I knew the term “sight translation,” I was already living it.
A Lifeline Across Oceans
It wasn’t until I was eight years old, traveling across the globe alone, that I realized the full depth of what it meant to be an interpreter. In those days, I had no knowledge of English and found myself starting a new life in a foreign land, a world so strange and new to my young eyes. It was the flight attendant assigned to me who became my guiding light—my communication lifeline. She wasn’t just a caretaker, but a bridge in every sense of the word, ensuring that language and cultural barriers never stood in the way of my journey. She calmed my fears, translated my confusion into understanding, and showed me the power of connection.
From Personal Journey to Profession
That experience planted the seeds of curiosity within me, a curiosity that blossomed into a life-long desire to help others in similar situations. On the one hand, I felt a responsibility to give back to the world, to help those navigating foreign lands or unfamiliar tongues. On the other, I felt a challenge—a call to learn, grow, and explore the vast world around me.
With limited resources, I became my family’s translator early on, helping my mother, relatives, and friends bridge the gap between our native language and English. This role became my foundation, and it wasn’t long before I realized I could turn this passion into a career. I pursued higher education, and my desire to interpret and translate only deepened. Language, I discovered, should never be a barrier to success—it should be a bridge.
